One Tree Planted is a non-profit environmental charity with a focus on global reforestation. With amazing partners in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa they get trees in the ground and restore forests after fires and floods, create jobs, build communities, and protect habitat for biodiversity. In 2022 they planted over 52 million trees!

Committed to sustainability and social responsibility throughout the supply chain

Sustainability and social responsibility are key values at Sunny Get Up, and we’re getting greener every step of the way! We work with a print-on-demand (POD) supplier so we only produce items we get an order for, avoiding textile waste from overproduction. Our printing partner’s high-quality printing tech creates almost no wastewaters and uses less energy than standard industry printers. The inks we use for printing are Oeko-Tex™ certified, vegan, water-based, and free of harmful chemicals. Our printing partner has also partnered up with Sedex, one of the world’s leading ethical trade service providers to ensure transparency and help monitor supplier compliance. In short, our printing partner aims to improve production sustainability, support employees and communities, combat climate change, and guarantee ethical working standards.

So leave mass-produced clothing behind and get your custom-made wearable art from Sunny Get Up! Read on for more details about our efforts towards sustainable and socially responsible production:

Custom-Made

Each item is made just for you. No textile waste from leftover stock.

Did you know that each item from Sunny Get Up is custom-made just for you? Literally. We only create the product when we receive your order for it, avoiding textile waste. In traditional made-to-sell retail stores, products are made in large quantities and often exceed market demand. Around 85% of all textiles produced by the fashion industry end up in landfills, making it a major contributor to environmental damage. But with Sunny Get Up, each item is printed only when ordered, so there is no waste from bulk or left-over stock ending up in a landfill. Even damaged products are donated to charitable organizations, not thrown into a landfill.

Sustainability in Production

Made with care for the planet.

Materials & Print on Demand (POD) Methods:

  • Each item is individually printed, cut, and hand-sewn by an in-house team.

  • The print-on-demand custom production approach is critical in reducing waste.

  • The inks we use for printing are Oeko-TexTM certified, vegan, water-based, and free of harmful chemicals. All ink waste is disposed of to meet environmental regulations.

  • The sublimation printing method used is more eco-friendly because it doesn’t require as much water as compared to other dye transfer techniques. We use Kornit printers that generate almost zero wastewater and use less energy than standard industry printers, which lowers our carbon footprint.

  • The Recycled Longline Sports Bra fabric is made of recycled materials, containing 74% recycled polyester and 26% elastane.

  • The Recycled Zip Hoodie fabric is made of 95% recycled polyester, 5% spandex

  • The Recycled Long-Sleeve Crop Top fabric is made of 81% REPREVE recycled polyester, 19% LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™

  • Damaged and returned products are donated to local charities.

Measuring our carbon footprint: To assess our environmental impact, our printing partner adheres to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, which is a step-by-step guide for companies to measure and manage their GHG emissions.

While our printing partner is finalizing the data for 2023, their average carbon footprint for a printed product in 2022 was 16.89 lbs (7.66 kg) of CO2, categorized into three scopes: Scope 1: in-house natural gas, propane, and fuel consumption; Scope 2: in-house energy consumption; Scope 3 (all indirect emissions). About 96% of our printing partner’s emissions come from Scope 3 or indirect activities, which aligns with industries producing consumer staples. The remaining 4% stems from direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2). Key impact areas include: Purchased goods and services (50%); Use of sold products (28%); Downstream transportation and distribution (10%).

Currently, none of our printing partner’s competitors disclose their CO2 footprint data, making it hard to assess our performance against other players in the POD industry. Nevertheless, we believe transparency empowers our customers to make informed decisions.

Packaging: Our printing partner has switched to 90%–100% post-consumer recycled plastic packaging for apparel products. Post-consumer recycled plastic (often referred to as PCR) is made from items that consumers use and recycle every day, like plastic bottles and food containers. PCR packaging protects your order just as well as regular plastic bags, however, choosing PCR over first-use plastics reduces the environmental impact plastic has on our planet.

The new packaging design is meant to be accessible and self-explanatory, featuring the message “Recycle me again.” It communicates two separate ideas to draw attention to recycling: the packaging has been recycled before and you can recycle it again. The packaging also provides information about what PCR plastic is, and the proper way to dispose of it. In most locations, plastic bags don’t belong in everyday recycling bins and need to be taken to a drop-off point, like your nearest grocery store. The new packaging features a QR code, which directs you to a website with the closest drop-off points in your area.

Shipping: Our printing partner only creates products once an order is placed and delivers over 85% of them within the region they’re fulfilled. That means overproduction is greatly reduced, and strategically-located fulfillment centers lead to lower CO₂ emissions when transporting orders.

Social Responsibility in Production

Made with care for people. No sweatshops!

Sunny Get Up products are individually printed, cut, and hand-sewn by an in-house team. Our printing partner values and celebrates people for who they are and they are committed to creating a work environment that is safe and welcoming for people of all backgrounds. They encourage both personal and professional growth and are keen on learning and supporting one another, regardless of race, color, sex, gender identity, and other characteristics.

  • Fabrics are sourced from ethical suppliers that comply to labor, environmental, and safety standards.

  • Fulfillment centers are located in LA, Charlotte, Mexico, and Riga, and each team member enjoys paid time off, healthcare benefits, and a safe and friendly work environment.

  • To pledge their support to the Black Lives Matter movement, our printing partner committed to donating $20,000 to the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People).

Long-lasting quality

Comfortable, durable, and made to last.

These clothes are built to last - Anna personally tested these products for 2 years (regularly practicing and teaching yoga and hiking in them) before launching to make sure they held up to regular use and washing, so they won’t wear out quickly and end up in a landfill. Our printing partner also does durability, wash, and wear tests.

Product Care: How you care for your new activewear matters for sustainability too. Please note that activewear items made from polyester/spandex blends release plastic microfibers into the environment during washing. That’s why we recommend getting a Guppyfriend to prevent microfiber pollution. See our Product Care page to learn more about how best to care for your new favorite activewear items so that they continue their sustainability mission and live a long and active life.

Yoga is at its most democratic when it awakens people to oneness—to the reality that as human beings we are divinely equalized with each other and interconnected with the world we inhabit, to the fact that, while no one else can gain enlightenment for us, nevertheless we are on this journey together.
